Storm damage to your roof

High winds and driving rain are the most common cause of sudden roof damage in the UK — here's what to do.

High winds and driving rain are the most common cause of sudden roof damage in the UK — here's what to do.

What to do first

Stay off the roof. From the ground, look for missing or displaced tiles, debris, or sagging. Inside, check the loft for daylight and water. If water is getting in, contain it and move valuables. Take photos for your insurer before any temporary repairs.

Will insurance cover it?

Storm damage is usually covered by buildings insurance, but insurers often require evidence the roof was in good condition beforehand and may expect a professional report. Some policies require a full re-roof on older properties before settling. Check your policy wording and document everything.

Getting it assessed

A roofer can assess whether the damage is a localised repair (a few tiles, a section of flashing) or whether the storm has exposed a roof that was already failing. Get this in writing — it helps with both the decision and any claim.

Not sure how bad it is? The honest answer to most roof damage is "it depends on what a survey finds." Get a free, no-obligation inspection and fixed quote from a local vetted roofer — and an instant ballpark from our roof cost calculator first if you'd like one.
